Dic Evans and MV Hindlea - 27.10.1959

Dic Evans was an ordinary Welshman
Who earned his medals fighting with the sea
Dic Evans was an ordinary Welshman
He heard of death - and would not let it be

They said The Hindlea’s heading for disaster
She’s dragged her anchor loose in Dulas Bay
The gale’s force 10 and still its getting faster
There’s no hope that the crew can get away’
ch
Dic Evans called his men and his reserve boat
Hugh Jones had joined the crew - but he was new
The other three were steady steady crewmen
And how the rescue came they never knew
ch
In 59 the Hindlea out of Cardiff
Her anchor chain was whipping in the breeze
Her mast below  Propellor thrashing wildly
above the lifeboat crew on storm wild seas
ch
Ten times the lifeboat sailed in close to Hindlea
Eight desperate men jumped down onto her deck
Then Coxswain Evans turned to sail to Moelfre
His precious lives recovered from the wreck
ch
Don’t discount the braveries of Welshmen
Their silver bronze and gold can tell some tales
of how the shipwrecked sailor comes to safety
in gentle harbours on the coast of Wales

Dic Evans was an ordinary Welshman
Who earned his medals fighting with the sea
Dic Evans was an ordinary Welshman
He heard of death - and would not let it be
